What is Holistic Health Coaching — And Why It's About So Much More Than Your Diet

You can be doing all the right things and still feel completely depleted. Here's why — and what to do about it.

There's a particular kind of exhaustion that's hard to explain to people who haven't felt it.

It's not the tiredness that a good night's sleep fixes. It's not the kind that goes away on holiday, though holidays help for a while. It's the deeper, more persistent kind — where you wake up already behind, where your body feels like it's running a programme you didn't choose, where the things that are supposed to restore you somehow don't quite reach.

If that sounds familiar, I want to offer you something most standard health advice misses entirely: you might not have a health problem so much as a whole-person problem. And that's exactly what holistic health coaching is designed to address.

What holistic health coaching actually is

Let's start with what it isn't. It's not a nutritionist giving you a meal plan. It's not a personal trainer designing your workout programme. It's not a GP running tests. All of those things have their place — but holistic health coaching occupies a completely different space.

A holistic health coach looks at your health as a system rather than a set of separate variables. That means looking at the connection between your physical health, your emotional state, your nervous system, your habits, your energy levels, the patterns you run automatically, and the life you're trying to live while managing all of the above.

'Holistic' means whole. And the whole — in my experience — is almost always more interesting than any individual part.

What drew me to Holistic Health was connecting the dots across someone’s patterns, habits or lifestyle. It’s easy to think ‘oh I should probably cut down on my caffeine’, and we can absolutely play with this as needed, but if you don’t look at the ‘why’ behind it, then we risk implementing a quick fix habit shift that might sustain for a period of time but not make a lasting shift for you.

Why you can't separate your health from your life

Here is the thing most conventional health advice ignores: your body doesn't know the difference between physical stress and emotional stress. It responds to both in exactly the same way — with cortisol, with tension, with the cascade of physiological changes that constitute the stress response.

So when you're running late every morning and skipping breakfast to get the kids out the door, and holding a difficult conversation in your body for three days because you haven't had time to process it, and waking at 3am with your mind already problem-solving, and using coffee to go up and wine to come down — your body is registering all of that as threat. All day. Every day.

The result isn't just feeling stressed. It's exhaustion that won't shift. Inflammation. Disrupted sleep. Digestive issues. Mood swings. A nervous system that's been in high gear for so long it has forgotten what rest actually feels like.

These aren't separate problems to fix one by one. They're one conversation your body is trying to have with you.

This is why addressing 'just the food' or 'just the exercise' rarely creates the change people are hoping for. Not because those things don't matter — they do. But because they're downstream of something bigger. And until you address the bigger thing, the downstream fixes keep requiring more effort than they should.

What holistic health coaching actually covers

When I work with a woman on her health, we might cover any or all of the following — led entirely by what's most alive and relevant for her:

Energy and fatigue

Not just 'you need more sleep' — but why you're not sleeping, what's driving the depletion, and what restoring your energy actually requires at the root. This is often the presenting issue that opens up into much bigger territory.

The nervous system

Understanding your stress response — not as a character flaw or weakness, but as a physiological pattern that can be understood and gradually shifted. This is foundational. Almost everything else builds on it.

Habits and patterns

Not just what you do, but why. The habits that are hardest to change are usually serving a function — protecting you from something, managing an emotion, meeting a need that isn't being met any other way. Changing them sustainably means understanding that function first.

The mind-body connection

The tension you carry in your shoulders. The way your stomach tightens before a difficult conversation. The exhaustion that hits specifically on Sunday evenings. Your body is communicating constantly. Learning to listen to it — rather than override it — is one of the most valuable things this work offers.

Emotional health

Anxiety, numbness, overwhelm, reactivity, the low-grade flatness that isn't quite depression but isn't wellness either. These aren't separate from your physical health. They're part of the same system, and they respond to the same whole-person approach.

Energy work

This is where my approach goes somewhere most health coaching doesn't. Using Reiki and possibly sound bowls within our sessions, we work with what the body is holding energetically — clearing the accumulated weight of stress, old patterns, and emotional residue that lives in the nervous system and the body's energy field. It sounds abstract until you experience it. After that, it makes complete sense.

What a session with me looks like

We will explore what’s happening in your life, looking at overall foods consumed, sleeping patterns, daily lifestyle. We’ll identify what’s working for you, what’s not and possibly explore what a curiosity test for the week could look like - fancy trying reducing that morning coffee intake on an empty stomach?

Together we build a plan for trying new habits - it can be fun! Explore overall health shifts that might be beneficial. My approach is to treat any idea as a mini experiment, try it & see if it’s for you, how you feel after it. All of the new approaches will be small simple habit changes that should you feel a positive impact, will be easy for you to stick to.

What you will NOT get from me is a huge life overhaul in one go. It’s simply too much for you and your nervous system to sustain.

I am also not a medical practitioner nor advisor, meaning that I will not order nor recommend blood test, supplements etc I do however, partner with an amazing Natropath and other specialists, that might be beneficial as you look at your whole being - it can be a powerful combination alongside partnering with your medical dr.

The coffee, the cortisol, and why it all connects

I want to make this concrete, because the whole-person approach can sound theoretical until you see it in action.

Think about a typical Tuesday for a woman carrying too much. She wakes before her alarm because her nervous system never fully powered down. She skips breakfast or eats on the move. There's a difficult email waiting. She handles it, handles everything, moves through the day on caffeine and momentum. By 3pm she's running on fumes. By 7pm she's too wired to properly rest. By 10pm she's pouring a glass of wine to try to come down. And then she wonders why she can't sleep.

Each one of those moments is connected. The wired-tired feeling isn't a sleep problem — it's a nervous system pattern. The 3pm crash isn't a nutrition problem — it's a cortisol curve. The wine isn't a willpower problem — it's an attempt at regulation when no other tools are available.

When you look at the whole picture, interventions become obvious. When you look at each piece in isolation, you end up treating symptoms forever.

Is holistic health coaching right for you?

You might be ready for this work if:

  • You're exhausted in a way that the standard advice hasn't touched

  • You've tried the clean eating phases, the fitness programmes, the supplement regimens — and they help briefly but nothing changes at the root

  • Your body is giving you signals you've been too busy to listen to — persistent tension, poor sleep, digestive issues, frequent illness, mood swings

  • You sense the connection between how you're feeling physically and what's happening in your life, but you've never had space to look at both together

  • You want to feel genuinely well — not just less bad. Not just functional. Actually well.

You don't need to be in a health crisis. You don't need a diagnosis. You just need to be ready to look at the whole picture rather than another isolated fix.

How I work — and what makes it different

I'm a certified holistic health and life coach with over 20 years of experience in energy work — Reiki, sound healing, and somatic practice. What that means in real terms is that our sessions work on every level: the practical and the energetic, the mind and the body, the conscious patterns and the ones running quietly underneath.

I work with women 1:1 in Pacifica, CA and online worldwide. Sessions are weekly or bi-weekly, and we go at the pace that's right for you.

If you've read this and something has resonated — if you've recognised yourself in any of it — I'd love to hear from you. I offer a free 30-minute introductory call with no commitment and no pressure. Just a conversation to find out whether this might be the right fit. Simply click the Book a Session at the top of this site.

Your health is the whole picture. And you deserve support that treats it that way.
